{Teacher of the Year}
Mrs. Rebecca Snyder was recognized for being named 2009 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Mr. Steve LoCascio, Dr. Georgia Teppert, Mrs. Snyder, and Mr. Chad Krehlik gather for a photo at a breakfast honoring Mrs. Snyder.
Greater Latrobe has always been proud of its teachers, and on October 7, 2008, the school district learned just how high its teachers can go: the top.
Mrs. Rebecca Snyder, language arts teacher and department chair, was named 2009 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year at a ceremony in Harrisburg. She was chosen from 12 finalists and will now advance to the next level in Washington, D.C. The National Teacher of the Year will be named at the competition in April.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), a Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year must demonstrate outstanding characteristics as a teacher and have the ability to communicate his/her message to a broad audience.
Nominees must be exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled individuals, certified in pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, in any public school. They must inspire students of all backgrounds to learn and have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues. Mrs. Snyder accomplishes these criteria with flying colors in her English 11 and film media classes. You can read more about Mrs. Snyder by clicking here.
Mrs. Snyder has her duties cut out for her in the upcoming year. Not only will she continue her role as a Greater Latrobe educator, but she is now obligated to fulfill the responsibilities that come with the title. PDE’s website highlights some of these duties:
- Participating in the National Teacher of the Year program as a representative of Pennsylvania;
- Speaking at various engagements across the state;
- Participating in workshops;
- Working with legislative and other committees;
- Attending the Chief Council of State School conference in Dallas, TX and The U.S. Department of Education’s National Teacher’s Forum in Washington, D.C.;
- Participating in the International Space Camp in Huntsville, ALA; and
- Writing articles for educational journals.
Congratulations to Mrs. Snyder for achieving this outstanding accomplishment. You have made us proud!
